6236. Hamilton, NJ. Feb. 1. 63-year-old man injured when struck by a silver SUV which fled the scene.

Richard Mikulec, 86, was crossing the street at Shermer Road just north of Harlem Avenue at about 7 p.m. on the Monday night when he was struck by a vehicle police are now describing as a GM model van or box-style truck.

A convicted murderer was sentenced to state prison Monday for his role in a 2013 hit-and-run accident.

Judge Jeffery L. Finley found Ernest Priovolos, of Warrington, guilty and sentenced him to spend the next five to 12 months in prison on charges of causing an accident to an attended vehicle and six related traffic offenses stemming from an incident that occurred about 9 p.m. on Dec. 27, 2013, near the intersection of Bristol Road and Cooper Lane in Warrington.

Seekonk police said Thursday that they’re looking for a dark-colored General Motors sedan that struck and killed assistant town clerk Karen McHugh.

The family of hit-and-run victim Skylar Marion urged lawmakers Wednesday to help police track down vehicles involved in such accidents and increase penalties for those who flee the scene.

“We can make a change here today. We can hold people accountable for their actions,” Dawn Caley, Skylar’s aunt, told the Senate Judicial Proceedings Committee. “We may not be able to stop people from making bad decisions, but we can make it harder for them to get away with it.”

Caley and the Marion family were testifying in support of two pieces of legislation by state Sen. Bryan Simonaire, R-Pasadena.

Senate Bill 84 would increase the penalty for leaving the scene of a fatal incident from 10 to 15 years imprisonment.

Senate Bill 86 would establish a Yellow Alert program allowing law enforcement to quickly release vehicle information after fatal hit-and-runs.

The Orange County district attorney’s office filed charges Wednesday against a 20-year-old Emerald Bay resident accused in a fatal hit-and-run involving a cyclist last year, Laguna Beach police said.

Dylan Randluby is charged with felony hit-and-run and misdemeanor vehicular manslaughter in the collision on North Coast Highway that killed Laguna Beach resident John Colvin, 55.

New developments in the case against Maryland Bishop Heather Cook. Wednesday, a Baltimore grand jury indicted Cook following the hit and run accident that killed cyclist Tom Palermo. Police say her blood alcohol level was nearly three times the legal limit and she was texting and driving.

SCRANTON — For the first time a new state law named for a boy killed in a hit and run is being used to increase the potential jail time for a man from Lackawanna County.

Police say the suspect, David Turano of Carbondale, attempted to flee the scene of a crash that killed a boy and badly injured the boy’s father.

Turano was brought into the Lackawanna County District Attorney’s Office where he was charged with homicide by vehicle while driving under the influence and involuntary manslaughter for a deadly Labor Day weekend crash. (H/T Mary G.)

GRAND RAPIDS – The man accused of seriously hurting a young sledder in a hit-and-run accident has been arraigned.

Walker resident Kevin Daniel Witte, 23, is charged with failure to stop at the scene of a serious personal-injury accident. He was formally charged Thursday.

Police say Witte was behind the wheel of a car that hit a four-year-old boy who slid into Richmond Street the evening of January 24. The car left the scene after the crash.

A motorist charged with fleeing after she fatally struck the son of a federal judge as he walked home from a Christmas party pleaded no contest Friday to felony hit-and-run.

Marguerite Vuong, a 28-year postal employee, was driving to her 3 a.m. shift as a sorter when she struck 23-year-old David Pregerson, police said.

Pregerson, a budding film director, was the son of Dean D. Pregerson, a judge in the U.S. Central District and grandson of Harry Pregerson, who sits on the U.S. 9th Circuit Court of Appeals.

MIAMI (WSVN) — An Army reservist who was the victim of a hit-and-run last month was named a hero by Miami-Dade Fire Rescue Friday morning.

The Miami-Dade Fire crew who initially responded to 22-year-old Richard Parson’s accident last month paid him a visit at Jackson Memorial Hospital where he continues to recover.

The hospital told Parsons, an aspiring firefighter, that he was being escorted to his first day of rehab. He was instead escorted into a room full of Miami-Dade Fire Rescue officials who surprised him.

It was there that Parsons was named an honorary firefighter and was awarded with patches and a certificate. “I am the President of the Fire Officers Association of Miami-Dade, and on behalf of all the fire chiefs, we’d like to first thank you for your service, and we make you an honorary firefighter.”

Over the past eight days, three people died and another was injured in three hit-and-run accidents in the Baltimore region. Police are still seeking the drivers in all three incidents.

On Wednesday, Bishop Heather Elizabeth Cook was indicted on charges of automobile manslaughter, driving under the influence, texting while driving, and leaving the scene of the accident that killed bicyclist Thomas Palermo just days after Christmas.

What leads someone to flee an accident where another person might have suffered harm?

MUSKEGON, Mich. (WOOD) — The pickup truck that allegedly struck a man on Apple Avenue — the first of two vehicles to hit him — is owned by a Muskegon-area man with a record of impaired driving, state records show.

And I quote (VII)…

A 38-year-old man and his fiance were changing a flat tire over the weekend when they were struck by a vehicle on a Maryland highway. The man’s 13-year-old daughter was sitting in the backseat with her little brother. She saw her father — who later died — run down. She watched the other car speed away. Then, frantically, she dialed 911.

That’s when a dispatcher told her to “stop whining.”

DEER PARK, N.Y. (CBSNewYork/AP) — A 57-year-old woman has been arrested and charged in a fatal hit-and-run of a pedestrian in Deer Park, Long Island, police said.

Irene Caldarero, 57, of Deer Park, was charged with leaving the scene of an accident resulting in death. She struck a woman crossing Deer Park Avenue at about 8:30 p.m. Saturday, police said. Caldarero stopped briefly, but drove off before police arrived, authorities said. The victim has not been identified.

Former California Assemblyman Tom Ammiano, a community activist, a cab driver and a police officer were among the victims of a hit-and-run Mercedes driver over the weekend, causing a mess of mangled cars in the middle of the Mission District.

A crash Friday afternoon on Lancaster Drive turned into a bizarre confrontation between police and a man who left behind a large butcher knife in the car he had just crashed and took off his clothes as he ran from the scene, the Marion County Sheriff’s Officer reported Saturday night.

Friends and family of Justin Flowers gathered at his high school Tuesday morning to remember the 15-year-old who was killed in a hit-and-run crash exactly one year ago.

A memorial garden for Justin Flowers was dedicated at J.P. Taravella High School in Coral Springs. Flowers was a freshman with dreams of one day becoming a dancer. One of his teachers had his chair engraved with his name and “Class of 2017.” That chair stood in the garden with a single rose, a very stark reminder of Flowers’ absence.

Sawkulich, mother to seven minor children, remained in critical condition Sunday night, according to a Geisinger Community Medical Center spokeswoman.

MILPITAS, Calif. — Police are searching for a Milpitas man in connection with a hit-and-run collision with a garbage truck that killed a 14-year-old girl last week.

Alex Alcazar, 23, has been identified as the registered owner of a silver, two-door 1992 Cadillac El Dorado involved in the Feb. 4 collision with a garbage truck at North Milpitas Boulevard and Jacklin Road, police said.

The driver of the Cadillac drove away from the scene, but police officers followed a trail of debris for about a quarter of a mile and located the car stopped at a curb in the 800 block of Coyote Street, police said.

There they found 14-year-old Cynthia Ramirez Becerra, a San Jose resident, down on the ground beside the Cadillac with severe visible injuries.

A 32-year-old woman struck by a car in West Scranton eight days ago has died.

Betty Sawkulich died at 12:53 p.m. at Geisinger Medical Center from injuries she suffered in a Feb. 4 hit and run, Lackawanna County Coroner Timothy Rowland said.

Police have charged Tiffany Marie Timko of Hazleton with aggravated assault by vehicle and related counts, alleging Ms. Timko struck Ms. Sawkulich in the 700 block of South Main Avenue Feb. 4 and then drove away.

A Richardson man believed to be responsible for a hit-and-run crash that killed a one-year-old last month is finally in custody, Dallas police say.

Scott Michael Flynn, 42, was extradited from East Texas this week and charged with manslaughter and failure to stop and render aid.

He is accused of running a red light the night of Jan. 11, plowing his Dodge pick-up truck into a Toyota Camry, and fleeing on foot.

DANIA BEACH, Fla. (WSVN) — In a bittersweet homecoming, a Dania Beach teen returned home after he and his brother were critically injured in a hit-and-run accident.

Kelv’ron Florence, 14, and his 8-year-old brother Apollo Brown were on their way home from a middle school basketball game on Dec. 8, 2014. The two never made it because they were hit while trying to cross a street. But on Wednesday, Kelv’ron was discharged from the hospital and ready to finally head home. “As you can see, we’re on our way home,” said Apollo Brown, Kelv’ron’s father.

ARLINGTON — A $10,000 reward was offered Tuesday for the arrest and indictment of a hit-and-run motorist who killed a college student walking across an intersection Jan. 16.

Oak Farms Dairy made the offer in hope of helping investigators identify the driver who killed Kelly Walters, 20, as she tried to cross Northeast Green Oaks Boulevard at Burney Road that night.

Then the Lincoln hit Briceno. She smashed into the windshield and fell to the asphalt. Briceno, 27, survived but suffered severe injuries to her skull, spine and brain. The driver continued on Chestnut, smacking the Lincoln into a Ford F-350 parallel-parked alongside the Herald Building. The car then drove off.

Police said they found 36-year-old Marsha Santoro hiding in a shallow hole where she had tried to cover herself with dirt.

Around 6 p.m. Friday, police said Santoro was driving northbound on North 22nd Street when a child riding a Big Wheel rolled out of a driveway and Santoro hit the child.

Witnesses told officers Santoro attempted to drive away, but when that didn’t work, she got out of her Ford F-150 pickup and walked off toward Washougal River Road, according to police.

Police said a K-9 unit tracked Santoro to the hole that she was hiding in. When officers gave Santoro a warning, she surrendered, according to police.

The family and friends of two men hit by an unidentified vehicle April 18, killing one and injuring the other, are encouraging the driver responsible to turn himself in and asking the public to call police with any information about the accident.

As they did many nights a week, Swafford, 32, and his brother-in-law Jason Cable, 40, were riding their bikes home from work around 3 a.m. that Saturday.

According to the police report, a silver SUV made an illegal turn at a red light, hitting a passing car and knocking that car into a third vehicle. The police report says witnesses saw a man exit the silver SUV and flee on foot. Witnesses reported that the man then returned to the SUV where he “grabbed a large hand full of cash,” which he shoved into his pants before jumping a fence and running away.

Mentor police solved a hit and run crash on Saturday all because of a license plate imprint left on the van that was hit.

Police have made an arrest in the hit-and-run collision that injured three bicyclists near Alamo Square earlier this month, Officer Grace Gatpandan said Tuesday.

Bianca Lopez, a 25-year-old Fremont resident, reportedly surrendered to police Friday after she was publicly identified as the suspect.

Lopez is accused of driving a black Jeep Cherokee that rammed another vehicle near the intersection of Fell and Scott streets about 5:40 p.m. April 2. The Jeep then fled south on Scott Street, but in the northbound lane, striking three bicyclists — one of whom was thrown at least 20 feet.

On Wednesday night, 22-year-old Temple University senior Rachel Hall was riding her bicycle near the North Philadelphia campus when she was struck by a Mitsubishi Gallant and critically injured just a week before graduation.

Her father tells Action News Hall is a senior, set to graduate from the university next week. She was a goalkeeper for Temple’s lacrosse team, majored in Criminal Justice and hopes to become a police officer one day.

According to police, she was taken to Temple U. Hospital in “extremely critical condition with head and leg injuries.” That sounds just about as far from good as possible.

The car was later recovered. The driver was not.
