Tears streamed down Janet Vargo’s face Sunday as she released a balloon in the spot where her 5-year-old son was killed in 1970.

Her grief has not ebbed in the decades since.

“I think of him every day,” the octogenarian said.

About 20 family members gathered in Herminie on Sunday to celebrate what would have been Joey Vargo’s 49th birthday. He was struck and killed by a hit-and-run driver outside a coin laundry service on Sewickley Avenue on Sept. 20, 1970.

The driver hasn’t been found.

Racine County District Attorney Rich Chiapete was issued citations for operating while intoxicated and hit and run, Racine police said Saturday.

Chiapete said in a written statement released Saturday that he had been involved in a single-car accident near his home Friday night, according to a report in the Racine Journal Times.

“I was coming home from a birthday party and had a few drinks. I did initially panic and leave the scene,” he said in the statement. He added that he had shown “extremely poor judgment.”

ST. PAUL, Minn. — A man is in serious condition after he was struck in a hit-and-run on Saturday night in St. Paul.

Police said that Ronny Gray Jr. was struck by a vehicle driven by a 36-year-old woman after the two got into a fight. The incident happened around 5 p.m. near 7th and Mercer Streets.

Amy Boche and her husband Jeff Boche witnessed the hit-and-run near their St. Paul home.

“It sounded like a basketball bouncing on the ground,” Jeff Boche said. “It is a sound you never forget.”

And I quote (IV)…

FITCHBURG – Very slowly and with the use of a cane, Kervens Elysee made his way from his room at Kindred Hillcrest Nursing and Rehabilitation to the community room just down the hall. A new development in his recovery, walking is still very painful for Elysee, 26, the victim of a Feb. 27 hit-and-run accident in Lunenburg, but all he can do is smile.

He said he’s happy to be back on his feet, and looking forward to when he can go home and go back to work, but is trying to take his recovery day by day.

“God does everything little by little,” Elysee said Thursday. “He doesn’t do anything in one day.”

And I quote (V)…

Even the judge looked confused when the plea deal offered to Wendy Villegas was read out in court, says a somber Mario Lopez.

Villegas could have been sentenced to up to 15 years for having come tearing up the bridge on Cesar Chavez drunk last September 14th, slamming into Luis “Andy” Garcia and dragging his bike under her car, launching both Lopez and Ulises Melgar into the air, and fleeing the scene.

Instead, she was offered a deal of 3 years and 8 months — a sentence that fit within the window of what she might have gotten just for driving drunk and leaving the scene of a crash. And, because she is young and has a clean record, she will likely only serve a portion of that time.

The deal makes it painfully clear to her victims and their friends and families that she will not be asked to atone for the human cost of the havoc she wreaked that September night. And, they are not happy about it.

“How did it end up wrapping up so fast like that?” asks Melgar.

It’s a good question.

MONTCLAIR — A woman who chased down a suspect in a fatal hit-and-run crash received an award Monday night for her actions.

Ruth Bonillas received the Montclair Police Department “Certificate of Recognition” at the Montclair City Council meeting for helping police catch the suspect.

Bonillas was driving behind a gold Honda Accord in the 9500 block of Mills Avenue on March 10 when she saw the driver swerve and strike two pedestrians. Lucrecia Rodriguez, 50, of Montclair died and a 14-year-old girl was seriously injured.

Police said Bonillas chased after the driver into a residential neighborhood. The suspect, Nicholas Tortoro, 24, of Rancho Cucamonga, pulled over to look at the damage to his vehicle.

A Georgia woman made a desperate plea for help finding a callous hit-and-run driver who mowed down her two children, killing her 2-year-old son and seriously injuring her 4-year-old daughter.

Vashti Lindsay said she was waiting with her son, Caleb, and daughter, Myeria, to cross a street in Tucker when a pickup truck suddenly jumped the curb and cut the youngsters down on Saturday.

“I can’t get this scene of what he did to my children out of my head,” Lindsay told WXIA-TV.

SIOUX CITY | Prosecutors on Tuesday filed formal charges against a Le Mars, Iowa, woman charged in a 2012 fatal hit-and-run accident.

Assistant Woodbury County Attorney James Loomis filed charges of vehicular homicide and leaving the scene of a fatal accident against Victoria Ernst-Moreno. She is scheduled to be arraigned on April 25 in Woodbury County District Court.

Ernst-Moreno, 43, turned herself in on April 1 in connection with the Sept. 22, 2012, accident in which Lance Knudsen was killed.

A 62-year-old bicyclist was hospitalized Monday with serious injuries after she was struck in Rancho Bernardo by a 72-year-old woman who may have been driving under the influence and fled the scene only to be pulled over a short time later, police said.

SOUTH PARIS, Maine (NEWS CENTER) — It has been more than three weeks since 16-year old Xavier Fuentes was hit as he walked along the roadway on Route 117 in South Paris. He died on the way to the hospital. The driver of the vehicle that hit him remains a mystery. His family said they won’t get closure until they get some answers about what happened that night.

“I have to say that I am starting to feel slightly hopeless that somebody may not come forward,” said Fuentes’ mother Sheila Cole.

PHOENIX — The sister of a young father killed in a hit-and-run crash is begging for answers.

Cedric Jody, 28, was killed last month when a white van struck him near 38th Avenue and Indian School then left him to die in the street. Cedric had been headed home to his sister’s house just a couple of blocks away.

A month later, the driver still hasn’t been caught.

“How do they sleep at night?” wonders the victim’s sister, Veronica Jody. “How do they go day to day knowing that they hit somebody and they just kept going?”

PHILADELPHIA – A man coming to the United States from Germany for the first time to celebrate his granddaughter’s first birthday dies during a layover.

It’s believed that Wilfred Fleischmann was tired from the flight and wanted to lay down at a nearby hotel during his layover while his wife stayed at the airport.

Police found the 61-year-old man’s body along I-95 northbound a few hours later. They’re still looking for the hit-and-run driver. His family is devastated.

“It devastated us. We are broken,” Fleischmann’s daughter Anita Garza said.

Garza tells us her parents were on their way to visit her in North Carolina for her daughter Nina’s first birthday.

“He loved that little girl,” Garza said.

DENVER – A witness helped police track down and arrest the driver accused in a fatal hit and run near Monaco Parkway and Alameda Avenue in Denver.

The motorcyclist killed in the crash, a 23-year-old whose full identity has not yet been released, was serving in the Air Force and living in Aurora. His name will not be released until after all family is notified.

Officers say the driver responsible for the fatality drove off in a Mitsubishi SUV. They found him on a nearby side street and so far have identified him as a male in his 30s.

San Francisco 49ers cornerback Chris Culliver was charged with a felony and two misdemeanors following an alleged hit-and-run incident last month, the Santa Clara District Attorney’s office said on Wednesday.

Thanks to a tip from a citizen, DeKalb County police have identified a suspect in the hit-and-run death of a 2-year-old boy.

Concepcion Cruz, 57, a resident alien from El Salvador, is the man police are searching for, DeKalb Police Chief Cedric Alexander said Thursday.

“We are looking for this gentleman and we are asking the community to help us,” he said.

Homeland Security is involved in the case and Cruz will be placed on no-fly list, Alexander said.

Cruz’s truck was found in Gwinnett County on Wednesday, he said, and a search warrant and arrest warrants are being prepared.

SAN FRANCISCO — Weeks after a hit and run crash that left an 80-year-old woman dead, San Francisco police made an arrest in the case.

On Friday 31-year-old Nidra Stubbs, of San Francisco was arrested.

“Investigators did interview parties involved and were able to determine this person was responsible,” said police spokesman, Albie Esparza.

Idaho State Police said Friday that Chancy R. Lancaster, 38, of Kimberly was arrested in connection with an incident that hurt a runner on Center Street.

FORT WALTON BEACH — A 22-year-old Hurlburt Field airman has been arrested in connection with the hit-and-run death of a man in February, according to Fort Walton Beach police.

Senior Airman Joshua David Wilson of Fort Walton Beach was charged Friday with hit-and-run/failure to stop or remain at a crash involving death, Police Cpl. Sheldon Sheffield said.

The victim, Demetris Williams of Fort Walton Beach, was an experienced carpenter and mechanic, his father, Edward Williams, said after the Feb. 5 accident.

His family still is coming to grips with the 26-year-old Demetris’ death, said his stepmother, Damita Bridges. Although some peace has come with the arrest, it isn’t much.
Two families have been torn apart, she said — hers and Wilson’s.

“All we can do is pray, and I pray for both families,” Bridges said.

Two years after her son’s accident a Northeast Philadelphia, a mother is still trying to find the person responsible.

At 10:15 p.m. on April 3, 2012, then 17-year-old David Silva was riding his bike on Tyson Avenue in the area of Ditman Street in the city’s Tacony section.

That’s when police say he was struck from behind by a car. The driver fled the scene.

Silva’s family says the teenager suffered a traumatic brain injury that has resulted in physical and mental challenges.

The Citizens Crime Commission is administering a $1,000 reward for the arrest and conviction of the person responsible in that case.

TULSA – Tulsa police arrested a driver after a woman was hit by a truck in the parking lot of the Market Pub near 51st and Memorial.

Officers say two women were arguing around 2 a.m. Sunday when one got behind the wheel and the other stood in the grass in front of the truck.

Police say the woman in the truck, 27-year-old Michele Dawson, backed up, put the car in drive, rode over a curb and struck the other woman, driving her around 15 feet and into a retaining wall.

Investigators say Dawson fled the scene and was arrested later.

The Bakersfield Police Department is asking for your help to find a local suspect accused of a hit-and-run incident in East Bakersfield.

The BPD was called on Monday to investigate the scene at the corner of East Truxtun Avenue and Miller Street, where they found a 90-year-old man with major injuries who is said to have been riding a motorcycle eastbound on E. Truxtun Avenue.

DENVER – A woman accused of intentionally hitting an Aurora man with her car, pinning him against a Red Box kiosk and breaking his leg, has been formally charged with a hate crime.

Police arrested Fanya Juwan Weatherspoon, 40, late last week. She is being held at the Denver Jail on $50,000 bond.

“I was happy that they caught her,” said Alejandro Lopez. “She’s going to have to pay for what she did.”

And I quote (V)…

One night last April, Skylar Marion and two friends set out in the dark, down Pasadena’s Mountain Road to a nearby convenience store. It started as a trip for snacks on a Friday night, innocent teenage fun for a boy known to be sweet to his female friends.

“What’s every 15-year-old’s dream?” says Skylar’s father, Michael Marion. “Walking down the road with two girls, arm in arm.”

The dream turned into a nightmare for Skylar’s family, a nightmare that has reverberated through the close-knit Pasadena community. Two-tenths of a mile shy of the convenience store, a Ford Expedition struck Skylar, throwing him into one of the girls.

The Expedition never stopped, leaving behind two wounded teens. The third raced back to Skylar’s house for help.

The injured girl eventually recovered from her injuries. Skylar, a Chesapeake High School freshman who loved hot rods and riding bikes, died at Maryland Shock Trauma Center three days after the April 12, 2013, incident.

BAKERSFIELD – Police are asking the community for assistance in finding the suspect of a hit and run, identified at Juan Armando Cortez.

Cortez is accused of striking a 90-year-old man on a motorcycle. Witnesses stated that the driver of van failed to stop at a stop sign on Miller Street near Truxtun Avenue before striking the victim Monday.

SARASOTA, Fla. – A Sarasota man was arrested early Wednesday after police say he fatally struck a pedestrian on the sidewalk and attempted to keep driving.

And I quote (VIII)…

You can see it clearly in the police interrogation video: Axel Inostroza’s story falls apart under questioning from detectives.

“I hit him,” Inostroza said in the video, which was played Wednesday in open court during the defendant’s Arthur hearing, where he asked for bond to get out of jail.

And I quote (IX)…

It’s been two months since Steve Acquaviva was hit in East Garden City by a pickup, whose driver covered him with a blanket before taking off at the sound of police sirens.

Unable to remember what happened, the victim Wednesday released a surveillance video recording of the Feb. 12 accident, hoping someone will come forward about the driver.

And I quote (X)…

Two men are facing criminal charges following a hit-and-run accident where the impact send the body of a bicyclist into the bed of the suspect’s pickup truck.

Edinburg police told Action 4 News 38-year-old Eduardo Arguelles and another cyclist were riding along U.S. Highway 281 and Trenton Avenue when Arguelles was hit by a pickup truck.

Details about the accident were not immediately available but investigators said the Arguelles was killed in the accident and that the impact sent his body directly into the bed of the pickup truck.

The other cyclist called 911 but the driver and passenger fled the scene in the truck with the body in the back of the pickup truck.

When police arrived, they made contact with the victim, who told them she was six months pregnant. She was on the ground being treated by Lower Providence EMS for injuries suffered when she was struck by a vehicle. The victim complained of hip and stomach pain and was transported to Paoli hospital. The unborn child was unharmed.

EDINBURG — Two men were arrested after police say they struck and killed an avid cyclist and popular University of Texas-Pan American employee, then attempted to dump the man’s body in a drainage ditch Thursday morning.

The incident is the third fatality of a bicyclist in less than a month. A pickup truck struck a bicyclist north of Edinburg on March 29, and another cyclist died after she was hit by a car in McAllen on March 27.

Friends of Thursday’s victim — Eduardo Arguelles, 38 — said the incident underscores the ongoing challenge bicyclists face in sharing area roads

“People tell me that here in the Valley there is no respect for cyclists,” said Irma Hermida, who worked with Arguelles in the UTPA Information Technology division.

A child was killed after being hit by a driver in Pleasure Ridge Park Thursday evening, and the man who allegedly struck the boy and sped off has been charged with murder.

Benjamin Clem, 5, was struck by a mini van while riding a scooter near his home in the 5800 block of Grandel Boulevard around 7 p.m. Thursday, said Officer Carey Klain, a Louisville Metro Police spokeswoman.

A woman who pleaded guilty to driving into a crowd during a vigil for a man killed in a hit-and-run accident was sentenced to five years’ probation Thursday.

Rochelle Taylor, 21, was sentenced for the Feb. 8 accident on Hylda Avenue on the South Side. She pleaded guilty to a charge of leaving the scene of an accident.

Police said Taylor ran into a crowd that was having a vigil for 23-year-old Robert Brown, who was killed about a week earlier at just about the same spot, also by a hit-and-run driver.

Benjamin had been with his father and brother, riding the scooter neighbor Ray Kaelin said he so dearly loved.

“He was a happy-go-lucky kid. He had a lot of energy. They used to love to run and ride the scooter up and down the street,” said Kaelin.

“Just like one of my kids. I feel like I lost one of mine, because I won’t see him out there,” said Kaelin.

TALLAHASSEE — With what one lawmaker called a “mass epidemic” of hit-and-run crashes, the Florida House on Tuesday voted 118-0 to give final approval to a bill that would increase penalties for drivers who leave the scenes of serious accidents.

The bill (SB 102), which also received unanimous support in the Senate and now goes to Gov. Rick Scott, is named after Aaron Cohen, a 36-year-old bicyclist who was killed in a 2012 hit-and-run accident on the Rickenbacker Causeway in Miami-Dade County.

The bill, in part, creates a four-year minimum mandatory sentence for drivers who leave the scenes of accidents involving deaths. Under current law, which does not include such a minimum-mandatory requirement, drivers sometimes can have incentives to leave accident scenes, according to supporters of the bill.

ADAMS COUNTY – The passenger in a fatal hit-and-run in Thornton is facing manslaughter charges after police say she pried the victim’s fingers from the moving vehicle he was holding onto, causing him to fall.

Cynthia Marie Vigil was the passenger in a van involved in a hit-and-run death that killed 29-year-old Joshua Stewart Saturday. The hit-and-run occurred at the 9600 block of Race Street in Thornton.

The driver of the van, Dannel Bond Kimble, has also been charged with manslaughter, as well as additional charges for leaving the scene of a fatal accident and reckless vehicular homicide.

According to an arrest affidavit, Stewart was a passenger in a van driven by Kimble when an argument ensued and Stewart tried to get out of the van.

That is when police said Vigil pried Stewart’s fingers loose from the door of the van, causing him to lose his grip. Stewart was then run over by the van, and later a second vehicle.

Los Angeles police are expected to shut down sections of road between Los Feliz and Griffith Park on Sunday morning as waves of cyclists take to the streets to raise awareness about hit-and-runs.

The event, Finish the Ride, was created after local resident Damian Kevitt, 37, was hit by a van and dragged nearly a quarter-mile onto the 5 Freeway near the L.A. Zoo last February.

Last year, Los Angeles logged more than 21,000 hit-and-run crimes, including more than 1,200 injuries and 41 deaths, according to Los Angeles police statistics. In Kevitt’s incident, the driver got away and Kevitt broke 20 bones and lost the lower half of his right leg.

“The only way I can bring closure to what happened to me is by taking the bad that occurred and turning it into something good,” Kevitt said in a statement announcing Finish the Ride.

The man gave a last minute letter to the court Tuesday morning saying that he would take it all back if he could. He was exposed to 16 years in prison but will serve far less.

Maurice Fields wanted to accept responsibility according to his attorney. So he took the offer by prosecutors and was sentenced Tuesday for gross vehicular manslaughter, hit-and-run and child endangerment.

Field’s attorney Roberto Dulce said, “There is nothing that shows remorse more than when you enter an early plea, which is what happened here.”

Bronson was 57 when he was killed on April 7, 2013. Two years earlier, his wife and daughter were killed when their vehicle was struck by a drunk driving the wrong way on an area highway as they were en route to a Fourth of July Day parade.

Glenn Doneghy is serving a 20-year prison sentence for the death of Officer Bryan Durman in 2010. He says he’s suing Durman’s widow, Brandy, for something he claims she said during an interview with WKYT.

Hit-and-run driver Thomas Letteer Jr. will spend two to five years in state prison for fleeing the scene after fatally striking a 5-year-old boy with his car in Wilkes-Barre in December 2012, Luzerne County Judge Joseph Sklarosky Jr. ruled Thursday.

Letteer, 23, pleaded guilty last month to a charge of accidents involving death or personal injury in connection with the crash that killed Kevin Miller at North and Franklin streets.

UPPER DARBY — An off-duty Upper Darby police officer who witnessed an alleged hit and run accident assisted in the arrest of the driver.

Markeece Lamont Spencer, 23, of the 4100 block of Garrett Road, Drexel Hill, was taken into custody after a brief chase shortly before 9 a.m. Friday May 16 on Garrett Road.

According to police Superintendent Michael Chitwood, Officer Ryan Wiseley was off-duty and headed to district court for a hearing when he witnessed a hit and run accident.

“He saw a Ford Expedition making a sudden U-turn and hit another car,” Chitwood said. “The defendant took off and Wiseley was smart enough to follow him while contacting police dispatch. Police were able to apprehend the hit and run driver because of Wiseley. It was a nice piece of police work.

“The defendant was operating a vehicle with a suspended license and has an extensive criminal record of guns, drugs and assaults. His weapon on Friday was a Ford Expedition. He shouldn’t have been on the road. Fortunately no one got hurt.”

WAIKIKI (HawaiiNewsNow) – In Jill Hansen’s last Facebook post, she bragged about becoming a professional surfer.

The time stamp shows she made that claim hours after a hit-and-run accident that seriously injured an elderly woman.

According to police, it was a road rage incident. Hansen followed 73-year old Elizabeth Conklin to her Waikiki condo on Kalakaua Avenue about noon Wednesday.

Witnesses told police, Hansen hit Conklin as she got out of her car, then reversed to hit her again.

A good samaritan, Chris Khory, grabbed a crowbar, and broke out the back window of the Volkswagen Passat. Khory works at the complex. His actions sent the driver running.

Hansen was arrested about seven hours later at an apartment complex in the Manoa area.

This isn’t her first run in with police. She has a pending assault case and in a separate case was ordered to undergo a mental health evaluation.

There is also an active restraining order filed by her father. According to the court documents, her father says she used Facebook to find someone to murder him and his family.

She has multiple, unintelligible rants on the social media site. She claims to be a professional surfer and model and lashes out at critics.

PAULSBORO – A twin brother and sister have been arrested and charged in the hit-and-run death of 30-year-old Gibbstown resident Eddie Lee Warthen, according to the Gloucester County Prosecutor’s Office (GCPO).

Warthen was struck twice by a four-door sedan around 4:30 a.m. Sunday on East Madison Street.

He was transported to Cooper Medical Center in Camden where he was pronounced dead three hours later. The cause of death was determined to be from traumatic injury.

Washington Township resident Robert Springer, 25, who is unemployed, is believed to have been the driver of the vehicle.

He is charged with murder, unlawful possession of a weapon, specifically a handgun, possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose, tampering with evidence and hindering prosecution.

He is being held in default of $500,000 bail.

His twin sister, Jessica Springer, who is employed as a dancer at bachelor parties, has been charged with tampering with evidence and hindering prosecution, according to the prosecutor’s office.

TULSA, Oklahoma – Tulsa Police arrested a 42-year-old man Monday evening in connection with a February 25, 2014, hit and run death at 3rd and Lewis.

Angela Young, 57, was killed as she crossed the street using a walker. A surveillance camera at a business captured the incident on video.

Officers said a tip led them to a home in the 300 block of South Xanthus on Monday. After getting a search warrant, members of the Northern Oklahoma Violent Crimes Task Force found a white minivan in the garage that matched the description of the van in the surveillance video.

Police say the 1998 Ford Windstar van was inside a shed covered with a tarp and surrounded by sheet metal. They say a new wooden fence had been built “around the premises which appeared to be used to conceal the vehicle.”

In February, Angela Young, 57 was crossing the intersection of 3rd and Lewis around 7 p.m. when a white van struck and killed her then fled. The vehicle quickly disappeared.

Officers believed the suspect may have been from the Tulsa area.

After several months, Sgt. Chris Witt with the Gilcrease Division says the investigation was at a halt. That was until this week.

“Based on the information from the lady who called in on the Hispanic hotline, we were able to locate, our suspect, locate a couple of witnesses and make an arrest in the case,” Witt said.

Fernando Jaramillo, 42 was arrested at his home, just three blocks away from the crime scene.

Proving a hit-and-run driver was impaired can be difficult because substances are usually out of a suspect’s system before police can arrest the person. Also, investigators can’t prove who was driving once occupants of a vehicle leave the scene. That limits the potential punishments those drivers could face if they are caught.

A new state law seeks to address that.

Under House Bill 2505, which Gov. Jan Brewer signed last month, prosecutors still can’t charge suspected impaired hit-and-run drivers with driving under the influence without solid evidence. But now, courts must send people for drug or alcohol screening if there is a strong reason to believe that a person was impaired at the time of the crash. That could lead to court-ordered substance-abuse treatment.

“That House bill would be one more thing we could use to hold people accountable for drinking and causing people serious injury on the roads,” Glendale police Detective David Carr said.

The Gilmer County coroner confirmed that 18-month-old Noah Pinson, died on Sunday at Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta Scottish Rite.

“I’m hurt. I’m just mad. Jordan’s taken away from me something I can never get back,” Noah’s mother, Heather Pinson told Channel 2′s Kerry Kavanaugh.

Investigators said the incident happened around 9 p.m. Friday at the Gilmer County River Park parking lot. According to the boy’s father, he was taking his toddler out of a stroller and into his van when a Ford Fusion drove quickly past, striking the boy.

“He heard the tires squealing and heard a big bump,” Pinson said.

The father reportedly picked up the child and took him immediately to the hospital. Noah’s parents were by his side when he died.

“[I told him] that I loved him, that he didn’t know how much he meant to me,” said Pinson of Noah’s final moments.

The night of the crash, passenger Shane Kizzy Leah Joseph, 24, lied to police when she gave her ex-boyfriend’s name as the person who was driving the SUV. Joseph’s ex-boyfriend was in Tampa at the time of the crash. Joseph is now charged with witness tampering and misdemeanor perjury.

LOS ANGELES (AP) – A substance-abuse counselor was sentenced Thursday to 55 years to life in prison for hitting a pedestrian with her car and driving through a Los Angeles suburb with the dying man on her windshield.

A jury earlier this year convicted Sherri Lynn Wilkins, 53, of second-degree murder, driving under the influence and hit-and-run.

Prosecutors said Wilkins’ blood-alcohol level was nearly twice the legal limit when she struck 31-year-old Phillip Moreno in November 2012 as she was leaving a counseling center.

She drove two miles through the city of Torrance before other motorists swarmed her car at a traffic light and kept her there until police arrived. Moreno was taken to a hospital, where he died. (H/T Brian Villa)

Caustrita’s brother, Joseph, told police his brother was crying and admitted he “hit someone and the person appeared to be dead,” Brown said.

In Lowell District Court, Judge Catherine Byrne released Caustrita, who has no record, on $1,500 cash bail after he pleaded not guilty to leaving the scene of an accident after death in the June 4 fatal hit and run crash.

With just five days left in the New York State Assembly session, North Fork and East End lawmakers are making a last-minute push to drum up support for bills that would increase penalties for hit-and-run drivers who flee the scene of serious accidents.

Those bills — including one co-sponsored by the North Fork’s assemblyman, Anthony Palumbo — are currently stalled in committee, where they have sat since January. The legislators say they have until Tuesday to get a bill out of the committee and onto the floor for a full Assembly vote.

“Really what we need to do is put pressure on the chair [of the Transportation Committee] to do it,” Mr. Palumbo told the News-Review. “It needs to be reported to the door by Tuesday, because it looks like we’re going to wrap up Thursday or Friday of next week.”

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KBAK/KBFX) — The Kern High School District police chief killed by a hit-and-run driver was honored Tuesday, on the third anniversary of the crash that took his life.

Steven Alvidrez, 52, was killed on June 17, 2011, shortly before midnight when a driver slammed into the Harley-Davidson motorcycle he and his wife Ramona were driving. The crash happened on Highway 99 just south of Delano.

According to the California Highway Patrol, the prime suspect in the case, David Lopez Lilly, has not been found.

Omar Chahid was charged by ECU police Monday with simple assault, resisting an officer, and being intoxicated and disruptive.

Police said the 21-year-old ran, but was arrested after a brief foot chase.

Chahid pleaded guilty last year to felony hit and run and two counts of assault with a deadly weapon inflicting serious injury. He was released from prison last summer and is on probation.

79-year-old Margaret Alford was found in the roadway at 54th and Bangor Avenue around 5 p.m. on Friday, May 30.

Police say the driver failed to control speed, failed to yield right of way to a pedestrian at an open intersection, and fled the scene without rendering aid.

Alford was taken to UMC with serious injuries and died on June 9.

Pascagoula police officer Daniel Snyder was sentenced Friday to 1 year in prison and five years post-release supervison for the hit-and-run death of Ocean Springs teenager Kaytlynn Brann last February.

Jackson County Circuit Court Judge Dale Harkey also fined Snyder $2,000, ordered him to reimburse Brann’s family for all funeral costs and also ordered Snyder to undergo evaluation for alcohol abuse.

Harkey lectured Snyder at length over his actions last February, but noted he could only sentence Snyder based on the hit-and-run conviction. Snyder was not charged with DUI in the accident, although there was evidence he had been drinking.

“You made a real stupid decision,” Harkey told Snyder, “but I can’t sentence you over suspicions or what I may believe. I have to sentence you based on the conviction.”

FREDERICK COUNTY, Va. – Investigators say they’re using hair fibers found on the windshield area and passenger door of a vehicle to help in a hit and run case.

According to Virginia State Police, at 12:30 a.m. Thursday morning, Catherine Lindahl, 22 of Stephens City, hit Elizabeth Bell, 36, from behind as Bell was walking on the eastbound side of Valley Mill Road just outside the city limits of Winchester.

Upon striking Bell, Lindahl left the scene. Court documents say Bell suffered serious injuries and was later transported to Winchester Medical Center.

With the assistance of K-9 Units from the Frederick County Sheriff’s Office, Lindahl was located half a mile away from the scene. It was then that they also noticed the hair fibers on her vehicle.
