A Facebook friend forwarded me a message shared by one of her Facebook friends last night. Please take a look and help if you can:
“Last night [Wednesday, Sept. 18] my dad was involved in a serious accident on RT 202 in King of Prussia, PA (in front if Sullivan’s steakhouse) around 9pm. He was rear ended by a white pickup truck driven by a male (possibly Hispanic). When my dad got out of his vehicle to assess damage and collect the driver’s information, the driver fled the scene. In the process he ran over my dad’s right side and drug him a short distance. My dad is suffering from 4-5 fractured ribs, a collapsed lung, fractured pelvis, and a hole in his kidney. He also has road rash all over his body and has needed 3 blood transfusions.
“Here’s where the help comes in… Thus far the driver has not been found (There is one witness that we know of as well as several 911 calls made). There has also been zero coverage by any media of the incident, despite reports being made to them. Please share this and spread the word. The more people that see this, the more likely we’re able to find the man responsible. Thank you!!!”
A spokesman for the department, Capt. Hellebush, just told me that info is scarce right now. They’re trying to pinpoint surveillance footage that could help ID the vehicle, but that it’s “a waiting game” right now. The victim, whose name was not released, is 51 years old. Hellebush also noted that they’ve gotten a slew of calls from media outlets on Friday morning, so the dissemination process seems to be working. If they’re able to get footage, it will be widely shared in an effort to solve the case, he said.

The maximum sentence that Thomas Costa could get would be 2-7 years. That is not enough and not fair. He ran someone over, and she died. He is already a bad seed, he should pay for his consequences. Thomas Costa should not be let free. He should live with what he did, and not get out of jail, with no parole exception, no bail.
Thomas Costa was violating his parole by driving his dad’s car. He violated his parole by driving, and then he hit someone. We need to keep this man off the streets and in a jail cell.
There was a bill introduced earlier this year in 2013, that hasn’t passed yet. It is related to a hit and run in Brooklyn, earlier in march of 2013.
The bill would be a Class B Felony- and would go up to 25 years, which is a very huge difference from where we are at right now, it being a Class D Felony and only 2-7 years.
That bill is sitting in a dusty drawer and no one is doing anything about it.

Karen Benjamin’s family realizes it isn’t the only one affected by a hit-and-run crash, and on Tuesday gathered with local politicians to call on New York state to increase penalties for people who flee the scene of a crash.
Benjamin, a 56-year-old Coram resident, died July 17 from injuries she sustained in a June 23 hit-and-run accident along Canal Road in Mount Sinai. A few weeks after her death, police arrested the alleged driver, Thomas Costa, a 31-year-old Coram resident, and charged him with leaving the scene of an accident causing death, a Class D felony. Costa, who pleaded not guilty to the charges, faces two to seven years in prison. He was not charged with vehicular manslaughter — the Suffolk County district attorney’s office previously said it did not have evidence of intoxication or impairment by drugs.
At a press conference just around the corner from the crash site, Andrew Benjamin, Karen’s husband, and the couple’s two daughters, 27-year-old Jennifer and 25-year-old Lindsay, were joined by Town of Brookhaven Supervisor Ed Romaine, Council members Dan Panico (R-Manorville) and Jane Bonner (C-Rocky Point) and Highway Superintendent Dan Losquadro to support a bill that passed in the Senate in February and is waiting on a vote in the Assembly — it has been referred to that chamber’s transportation committee. New York State Sen. Ken LaValle (R-Port Jefferson), who co-sponsored the Senate bill, also attended.

Roy Drukker said his son — Dean Drukker, 18 — probably would have died in the hit-and-run accident had his son’s companion, Noah Hickman, not been conscious and able to summon help. Hickman was also hit in the accident.
“The real seriousness of this issue is running off,” Drukker said. “You run over the top of Dean, and you leave the scene, and you seem to have no concern if he’s alive or dead.”
Coco has been accused of hitting Drukker and Hickman with the undercover police vehicle on the night of March 22, after leaving a gathering in Drukker’s Bedford neighborhood. Earlier this year, Bedford police charged Coco with two felony counts of conduct after an accident, the legal wording for the more commonly known charge of hit and run.

“Under Oregon law the penalty for hit-and-run is less than that for driving under the influence, so if you have a drunk driver who runs over and causes some property damage they’re suppose to stay put,” said retired detective Bruce McCain. “But if they flee the scene there’s actually an incentive for them to take their chance, leave the scene hoping the alcohol leaves their system rather than stay.”

These crashes have reached such epidemic proportions in Los Angeles that, during one recent year, nearly half of all collisions in the city involved a driver who fled the scene.
Crash data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration show that the number of fatal hit-and-run crashes is trending upward, from 1,274 in 2009, to 1,393 in 2010, to 1,449 in 2011, the most recent year for which statistics were available.
Perhaps more significantly, the 13.7% increase in hit-and-run deaths over that three-year period occurred while traffic deaths overall were falling 4.5%, from 33,883 in 2009 to 32,367 in 2011.
“The problem is bigger than I think most people are aware,” says Peter Kissinger, president and CEO of the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety.
