T-Jay was killed in a hit-and-run accident Sunday afternoon while riding his bicycle not far from home. Police would tell his father a driver hit him, stopped her car to look at the stricken boy, and sped off after a passenger in her car told her to leave.

Two people in another car wrote down the woman’s license plate number, called 911, and followed her until police arrived. Two more stayed with T-Jay as he lay dying in the street.

That is what has stayed with Tyrone Tillman in the long nights since his son was killed. He refers to T-Jay in the present tense, recounts happy memories with a smile. But he cries when he thinks of the strangers who comforted his son in his last minutes.

“I had thought he was just out there on the street by himself,” he said at his Harrowgate home Thursday afternoon. “I hope that I could be that strong for someone else.”

The defense team of 18-year-old Michael Hobbs told a judge Friday that as he matures, he will better understand the consequences of stealing a Chevy Tahoe and causing a hit-and-run crash that left two dead. The experience, the lawyers said, will certainly change his behavior over time.

The judge, Stephanie Rothstein, agreed but said the best place for Hobbs to learn those lessons is behind bars.

“You need a long time to arrive at these conclusions because your conduct was so dangerous and showed utter disregard for human life,” Rothstein said during Hobbs’ sentencing hearing Friday in Milwaukee County Circuit Court.

She sentenced Hobbs to 30 years in prison for a February crash that killed 74-year-old Bernard Hanson and 64-year-old Mary Hanson, a married couple who were a block away from their home on Milwaukee’s southwest side. In the moments before the crash, Hobbs blew past a stop sign and reached speeds of almost 80 mph in a residential neighborhood near S. 84th St. and W. Wilbur Ave.

He will likely be freed next week, not because DNA proved him innocent, but because he admitted he falsely confessed to a fatal 2013 hit-and-run to protect the now-alleged driver — his son.

The costly ruse, which one of Silva’s attorneys characterized as something out of Shakespeare, ended Thursday when prosecutors filed new charges against the 22-year-old son, also named Juan G. Silva.

The younger Silva faces three felonies in the fatal crash on Sept. 28, 2013, when a white GMC van barreled into a pair of pedestrians outside Ela de Copas Tavern near the 1200 block of W. National Ave., killing one and seriously injuring the other.

Two mothers grieving similar tragedies joined forces Tuesday night to call for safer streets near the spot where their adult children were killed by hit-and-run drivers three years apart.

It has been 30 days since Ashish “Bapi” Gupta, 50, was struck by a speeding Mercedes on South Broadway after he left the Broadway Oyster Bar. The driver fled the scene.

His mother, Genie Gupta, held a candlelight vigil Tuesday night to ask St. Louis officials to make the street safer for pedestrians and bicyclists. She was joined by Georgie Busch, whose daughter, Amber Wood, 23, was killed in a similar way outside the bar three years ago.

The vigil was held outside the bar at 736 South Broadway.

The vigil launched an effort its backers are calling ”BAPI,” or Bicycle and Pedestrian Initiative, to “demonstrate to the city that something must be done to make our streets safer.”

The child, Abdul Wilson, was killed in the incident back in April at 57th and Litchfield streets.

Surveillance video shows the driver striking the child, sending him 15 feet down the roadway. The driver then runs over the unconscious youngster before speeding away.

It’s never been the same on the 2700 block of Mascher Street in West Kensington for the family of little David Alicia, who would have been three-years-old today.

Family members posted his picture on the fence for a vigil Sunday night, honoring him on his birthday.

It was back in April when police say he and his 19-year-old mother Josephine Rivera were struck by a white 2007 Infinity as it sped down the street.

Police say the car sped off as mother and son were crossing.

David died at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia days after the crash, family says his mother is still healing from fractures and facial injuries.

Police say the owner of the car that hit them wasn’t driving the vehicle at the time, but came forward after watching news coverage and led cops to the car.

But the case has hit a snag, police sources say they know two people who were in the car at the time of the accident, but they don’t know who was driving at the exact moment of the crash.

Neighbors say this speed bump was installed after the incident, but what they really want is justice.

Whether they were thrown or blown into the bushes along Maze Boulevard, the photocopied white papers taped to both sides of neatly cut pieces of cardboard likely wouldn’t have caught the attention of passers-by. But the relatives of Arcadio Plancarte Nolasco recognized them right away: copies of prayers, neatly handwritten in Spanish by the Modesto man, who gave them to friends, family, people he encountered.

Nolasco was westbound on Maze, apparently trying to turn left onto Carpenter Road, when he pulled into the path of an oncoming car, police say. When traffic investigators arrive at the scene of a fatal hit-and-run — a crime on the rise in Florida — the only clues might be some skid marks, or a few fragments from the car that fled.

What may seem like debris strewn across the highway, however, is investigative gold to traffic-homicide detectives trying to find the car and its driver.Detectives hit the jackpot in September 2010 while sorting through the pieces of a broken chrome car grille after a driver killed a pedestrian on Landstar Boulevard near State Road 417 in Orange County and kept going.

ORLANDO, Fla. — Orlando Police Officer William Anderson, who was badly injured when he was run down by fleeing suspects in July, discussed his injuries in an emotional news conference on Wednesday.

Anderson has not returned to work and doesn’t know whether he’ll ever wear his police uniform again. He suffered a traumatic brain injury when teenage suspects ran him over during a traffic stop on July 13.

As a result of the hit-and-run, Anderson said he suffers severe spinal, head, neck and back pain and has seen little improvement since he was released from the hospital. He said he has tremors in his hand and has impaired vision because of his brain bouncing against the back of his eyes.

LANSING, Mich. (AP) — Police in Michigan have arrested the driver of a pickup truck who they believe intentionally struck a firefighter standing in a roadway collecting money for charity, killing him.

Dennis Rodeman, a seven-year veteran of the Lansing Fire Department, died Wednesday night, Mayor Virg Bernero said.

The 35-year-old Rodeman, who also served in the U.S. Marines in Iraq, according to the mayor, was struck about 3:40 p.m. He and other firefighters were participating in an annual fundraising campaign for the Muscular Dystrophy Association and the International Association of Fire Fighters, authorities said.

“This is a shocking and unthinkable tragedy. … Dennis was cut down in an instant, doing what he loved, what he believed in, what he believed in most: helping other people,” Bernero said at a press conference.

Rodeman was married two months ago, and he and his wife were expecting their first child, Fire Chief Randy Talifarro said.

A “traffic altercation” preceded Rodeman being hit, Lansing police Capt. Jim Kraus told the Lansing State Journal.
